- Size:Adults typically reach 2-4 cm (0.8-1.6 inches) in length.
- Color:While the wild type is brown, the popular red morph is selectively bred for a range of red intensities, with females being brighter.
- Anatomy:Like other shrimp, they have a segmented body, a rostrum (pointy nose), stalked eyes, antennae, and five pairs of legs.
- Lifespan:Under ideal conditions, they can live for one to two years.
- Origin:Native to Taiwan.
- Tank Environment:They thrive in freshwater aquariums and are known for being hardy and adaptable to a range of conditions.
- Diet:They are omnivores and primarily feed on algae, biofilm, and detritus, which makes them excellent cleaners.
- Behavior:Red Cherry Shrimp are active and peaceful, making them ideal for community tanks. They will explore new additions to their tank and clean them thoroughly.
- Sex Differences:Females are generally larger and more vividly colored than males.
- Moulting:They shed their exoskeleton, or carapace, as they grow, a process called moulting, after which they seek a safe, hidden spot to allow their new shell to harden.
- Reproduction:They do not have a distinct larval stage, meaning they are born as miniature versions of the adult shrimp, a trait that makes them easier to breed in captivity.
